Named a Best Midwestern College by The Princeton Review and a U.S. New & World Report Best College, as well as to Affordable Schools’ list of 30 most attractive yet affordable college campuses, Mayville State University is a small and personable college known as the "school of personal service" because of the attention provided to its students. The friendly community at MSU positively adds to each student’s college experience. The encouraging environment nurtures each student, helping him or her become a more well-rounded person. Small classes provide students big benefits. Students get to know their professors as mentors and friends, and they can count on their circle of lifelong friends.

Mayville State University’s family atmosphere lets students make lifelong friendships and have remarkable leadership opportunities. Students enjoy clubs, concerts, dances, theater, speech, student government, and intramural and varsity sports. With small class sizes, students get to know everyone, including their professors, on a personal level while having the opportunity to be involved in numerous activities.

Students can participate in everything from drama to music to varsity athletics. Opportunities exist for involvement in student government, band, choir, drama, speech, intramural sports, professional clubs, internships, on-campus jobs, and more. The Cometeers, a student volunteer organization, bring personal service to life at Mayville State. MSU competes in the North Star Association of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics and offers women’s basketball, volleyball and softball and men’s football, baseball and basketball, as well as a co-ed cheerleading team.

Mayville State University has instituted an integrated leadership program, funded by the Edson and Margaret Larson Foundation. The purpose of the program is to build the leadership characteristics needed to prepare all Mayville State University students to become future leaders for North Dakota.

MSU has a wide variety of programs from which to choose. A new program in special education serves to meet the demand for special education professionals in North Dakota. The special education major can be incorporated within traditional teacher preparation or added to an existing degree. All courses within the major are available on campus and online. Other academic programs new to MSU include early childhood education (B.S. in education); communication (B.A. and minor); sports management (B.S. and minor); fitness & wellness (B.S. and minor); medical lab science (B.S.); special needs generalist (minor); studies in education (B.A.); and nursing (B.S.). A minor in music is now available as well. Mayville State was recently granted permission to offer a Master of Arts in Teaching degree, which is designed to help remedy the teacher shortage in North Dakota.

Agassiz Hall, Mayville State’s largest residence hall, recently underwent a dramatic renovation and is providing apartment- and suite-style living accommodations.

A science-library renovation and an education addition have upgraded the science and library buildings, providing a new home for Mayville State’s Division of Education and Psychology.

The Health, Physical Education, and Recreation facilities are being upgraded and expanded to provide state-of-the-art facilities for students enrolled in this growing academic area at Mayville State. Completion of the project is planned for March of 2016.

Mayville State University offers many opportunities for community involvement. In addition to educational offerings, community members are invited to enjoy a number of events and activities that take place on campus, as well make use of numerous campus resources. These include the University and Community Fine Arts Series, which brings in world-class musicians each year; sporting activities; library resources; a wellness center; and much more.
